SOUTH DERBYSHIRE

  Ranmoor Outing

Saturday 8th April 1989 saw Ranmoor‘s tour of six-bell towers in the South Derbyshire area.

Early in the morning twelve of us, with a following of husbands and children, set off in a small convoy of cars and a minibus.

Our first tower was at Marchington, a nice ring,

and from there we went on to Sudbury whose church is adjacent to Sudbury Hall, an impressive ‘house’ complete with a lake and beautiful garden. The bells are unusual in that the 5th is heavier than the tenor.

Etwall was our third stop after ringing there we were kindly invited round to the vicarage for cups of tea and coffee. We all fitted into a couple of rooms somehow, and the refreshment was very welcome.

After a quick lunch break it was back to our rounds which meant ringing at Sutton on the Hill,

  then at Brailsford.

Our last tower was at Mugginton which had until recently only 4 bells. These were reconditioned and two new bells were added with a pleasant result. The ringing there made a good end to the day and all that remained was a scenic drive through Matlock and Chatsworth, back to Sheffield.
