Outings - Spring 2006

  The Wirral

  Saturday
1st  April 2006
On Saturday 1st April I went on the Ranmoor ringers outing.  Although I am not really a Ranmoor ringer, I often go to the Ranmoor practice night with my mum.  My mum had to stay at home because my uncles had come from London to put a new bathroom in our house.  So I went with Chris & Alison (who ring at Ranmoor) and left my mum behind.
Photo: Bebington>    We visited towers on the Wirral Peninsular near Chester.  It took us about two hours to drive there.  The first tower we went to was Bebington which had a very light ring of eight bells.

St Andrew, Bebington
Photo: Port Sunlight    Our next tower was Port Sunlight.  The inside of the church was very grand and the organist was playing.  The bells were more difficult to ring than Bebington bells, but I still managed to ring some rounds and call changes.

Photo: Rock Ferry    The tower before lunch was at Rock Ferry.  It was unusual because you went through a sports hall and up a funny short ladder to get to the ringing chamber.  The ropes were all very long, and even without a box I had too much rope.  I tried plain hunting but it was too difficult with the long ropes.

Lunch
We went for lunch to a pub near Neston.
We all sat together on one big table, and I had chips and a chicken baguette.

Photo: Neston    It should only have been a short drive to the church at Neston, but we went a longer way round and everyone else was already ringing when we got there.

Photo: Heswell   We missed a turning again on the way to Heswall, and this time we drove miles before realising that we had gone the wrong way.  Once again we were the last to arrive, but were still in time to have a ring.  We could see the sea from outside the church door.

Photo: Thurstaton Our last tower was Thurstaston.  They were light bells, and I found the treble too light to ring.  However I was able to ring the tenor, the first time I have ever rung the heaviest bell in a tower.  Afterwards we went up to see the bells, and I was able to touch the tenor that I had just rung.

Photo: The Band  We finished by having a group photo taken outside the church.
I enjoyed the day, and rang at six new towers, taking my tower total to nineteen.  I have added a few more towers since then, and am now up to twenty four!
